Does That Mean There’s Hope for Lion Tamers?    (Number 1 of 4)

OK, mentioning lion tamers in the same breath as professional accountants lets everyone know I watched Monty Python so I must be a Baby Boomer and thinking about retirement real soon.  If you DON’T know what I’m talking about, take five minutes to watch John Cleese and Michael Palin in the skit.  It is both priceless and a classic.  (No ant-eaters were harmed in the making of the skit!)

Before we discuss my truth claim that CPAs are naturals at social selling, I wish to dispel a vicious rumor that accountants are boring.  We are not!  Despite the joke about the definition of a computer being an accountant WITH a personality, we CPAs are really fun and exciting people.  Just ask any one of us!

It is important to distinguish the difference between Social Media Marketing (#SMM) and Social Selling (#SocialSelling).  Social Media Marketing is the use of social media platforms and websites in order to promote a product or service.  #SMM has become the standard term for e-marketing and digital marketing.  Sophisticated tools are available with which companies can track and measure the success of ad campaigns.  #SMM is MARKETING in the digital age.  On the other hand, #Social Selling is how organizations use Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networks to find, connect with, understand and nurture sales prospects.  It is SELLING.

“As sellers struggle to gain and sustain their buyers’ attention, it is essential to meet customers and prospects where they digitally reside” according to a Forrester Study commissioned in May 2017 by Hootsuite

The case for Social Selling has never been stronger.  Consider this article by Simon Kemp (@eskiomon) just released this past week:

  • 4 billion people (55% of the world's population use the internet)
  • 1/4 Billion connected in 2017!
  • 2/3s of the world’s population of 7.6 Billion have a mobile phone
  • 200 Million got there first mobile in 2017
  • 3 Billion people, 42% of the world’s population, use social media
  • Growth in social media usage is up, on average by 13% year-on-year
  • 1 million people join social media, every day!

It’s high time CPA’s got social!

CPAs both understand and have the skill set to sell through their personal networks.  They understand the power of community and the concept of engaging prospects through growing their network.

Please look for three more articles I will publish over the next few days where I will identify and explain the 7 reasons I am so optimistic, CPAs are natural social sellers and are ready to grow new business using #SocialSelling.
